CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Viv

VIV COULDN’T GET AWAY FAST ENOUGH FROM THE trailer in the hollow.

While she drove, several memories clicked into a pattern: Dex not continuing with kickboxing despite the free equipment. His asking about the thrift store. She’d just assumed he owned a lot of black T-shirts, but in reality, how many times had he worn the same one?

The way he looked at her just now, the realization that she’d made him feel so small—it made her sick. She’d had no idea.

That had been his whole point, hadn’t it?

Viv’s face burned as she hit the accelerator. As she turned onto the road that led back up the mountain, a prick of energy nipped her neck.

“Ahh!” she screamed, startled, and slammed on the brakes. “Stop it!”

There was no shoulder here, but it was one of the longer, straighter sections, so she stopped the car in the middle of the road and climbed out. “What are you?!” she called to the mountains, turning a full circle to survey the miles of trees and underbrush all around. “Leave me alone!”

It wasn’t like she expected the energy to talk to her, but she was done with it. The shock of it zinging her unexpectantly was bad enough, but a longer spell of it while driving might have caused an accident.

A flurry behind her made her turn, but it was only a pair of wild turkeys coming up from the brush.

“That better not be your answer,” she told the forest.

One of the turkeys clucked. Viv made a face at it.

Still furious, she returned to her car, beeped once to get the turkeys on their way, and drove much slower the rest of the way to her house.
